Grand speeches are for arrivals.
Leaving we don’t say much.
Why would we?

We’re coming back
after going home
for a little while
to re-supply

and to feed maps and pictures
of the Moon to the children

until the Moon-fed children learn
they can’t even go there

and they rebel

which creates enough fuel
for the return.

What was your role
on that summer night

when the blanket
on the lawn
was drenched
to the last thread
in honeysuckle

and we looked up
at a full moon
and didn’t see you

so locked
in the moment
and staring away
from Earth

turning a blind eye
on a stolen kiss

the hidden chaperone

looking away

for us.
